Hoe kunnen standaarden ons leefmilieu redden?

Dinsdag, 14 November, 2017 - 09:00 to 12:30

CONFERENTIE

Wanneer? Dinsdag 14 november, 9u-12u30, gevolgd door broodjeslunch

Waar? Kantoor van Bond Beter Leefmilieu, Tweekerkenstraat 47, 1000 Brussel

Programme

9:00: Registration and coffee

9:30: Opening speech

Mathias Bienstman, Policy coordinator Bond Beter Leefmilieu

9:40: What role can standards play in environmental and health protection?

Standards affect how products and services are designed, operated, and disposed. From the use of chemicals in products to the treatment of waste and beyond, standards are everywhere and affect our planet and life every day.

Standards are increasingly used to support laws and policies in areas of public interest, such as consumer safety and environmental protection. Under the so-called “New Approach” legislators turn to industry to decide on the technical means to meet essential legal requirements and deliver on political objectives. This means that businesses are predominantly deciding on ways to keep our planet green, whether it is with regards to energy efficiency, resource efficiency, or sustainable transport.

This panel will have an open exchange on how the New Approach has been used in Belgium’s environmental legislation, and what the plusses and minuses are. Has the New Approach helped raise health and environmental protection in Belgium and beyond? Should it be reviewed to ensure an effective contribution in the future? Are stakeholder interests balanced in the standardisation process?

  • Renaud Colette and Dieter de Lauthewer, Belgian public authorities (SPF Economie & SPF Environnement)
  • Olivier Thibaut, GAS.be laboratory
  • Consumer representative (to be confirmed)
  • Medium enterprise representative (to be confirmed)

The panel will be followed by questions and answers from the audience

10:50: Coffee break

11:10: Helping civil society engage in standardisation to strengthen how standards protect the environment

Civil society organisations and other stakeholders like SMEs bring an immense value to standardisation, something which is often underestimated or ignored. Their technical expertise and unique perspective improve the quality of standards and positively impact the role standards play in increasing health and environmental protection.

Civil society participation in standardisation in Belgium remains low, both due to the amount of resources and expertise needed to partake, and the obstacles they face to effectively participate in the process. Efforts are however being made to increase their participation and boost their cooperation with standards organisations.

In the second panel, speakers will share experiences on how to best promote and facilitate the involvement of civil society organisations in standardisation in Belgium to deliver high-quality standards that serve the interests of all.

  • Denis Pohl, SPF Environnement
  • Dany Sturtewagen, Belgian Electrotechnical Committee (CEB-BEC)
  • Kris van Eyck, Confédération des syndicats chrétiens (CSC-ACV)
  • Valérie Xhonneux, Inter-Environnement Wallonie (IEW)

The panel will be followed by questions and answers from the audience

12:20: Closing remarks

Laura Degallaix, European Citizens’ Organisation for Standardisation (ECOS)

12:30: Sandwich lunch
